It was in India during a survey of the lush Western Ghats mountain range in south-west India in October 2015. Some great scientists came to a conclusion that the nature of this spider is another species of spider and named the pointy-shaped nocturnal spider one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Harry Potter novel series by J.K. Rowling. Javed Ahmed and other great scientists studied this spider species and discovered that the spider shape is like the shape of a dry leave. The spider is shaped this way to camouflage to resemble a dried leaf during the daylight, so as to escape from predators.

The nocturnal spider has a confirm length of 7mm and has a hairy shell, spiny legs, and its shaped like a dry leaf pointed upward like the sorting hat in Harry Potter and a triangular abdomen .The discovery was published in December by Indian Journal of Arachnology and Rowling on twitter, tweeted this to Ahmed with great excitement.

Experts have also studied this spider species and concluded that it’s a newly discovered species. Javed was very happy when the information about the discovery went to the air. The discovery came after the release of a movie by the title of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from a book written by Rowling in 2001. It became the top on North American box offices and made a sum earning of $75 million which was a remarkable sale.

The naming was aimed at shining the spotlight on lesser-celebrated beasts and “draw attention to the fascinating, but often overlooked world of invertebrates and their secret lives”. The spider was named because it resembled the film version of the Sorting Hat that belonged to Godric Gryffindor that is used to place first-year Hogwarts students into their respective school houses.

Javed Ahmed, one of the scientific researchers told the media that he was a great fan of Harry Potter and was fond of his books very much. So, when he came across this tiny spider, he immediately thought of the magical hat. Other discoveries like this have been named after the person on discovery, such as a fly with a golden color named after an Australian scientists “Beyonce” and a tarantula found in Folsom California named after Johnny Cash, the American music legend who sang the “Folsom Prison Blues”, and a yellow spider discovered in Malaysia was named after a rock star “David Bowie”.

Ahmed, as a hard working researcher, proudly said that he and his team (great scientists) will soon add another discovery to this. That Gryffindor’s spider is not the first species to be named after a popular icon and more is yet to be done in the near future.
