Here is the story of Billy, a dog from Greece which was rescued and taken in animal foster care.
The first time Billy was seen was in a Facebook post where he was pictured in the streets. He was so scared. It is common for somebody who is involved in Animal Welfare in Greece to see the suffering that Billy was put under every day, but his photo was really heart-breaking.
No one could realise how difficult Billy’s situation was when an associate in the Greek Animal Welfare Centre reported his induction in foster. Two of the Animal Welfare volunteers travelled 70 kilometres to reach to him. He was immediately sent to the vet for medical attention. When Billy was taken there, it was sad to the see his suffering body and the absolute terror in his eyes.
It was a very petrifying experience and the people in animal foster care could not say anything or even cry for Billy’s situation. They were at least assured that he was taken off the streets and he was going to have the chance for a dignified death if the vet would advise that it was best to put him to sleep. The vet though had a different opinion. He just did a medical examination to him and took some blood samples and was send to one of the volunteer’s home.
Billy was diagnosed from a very contagious type of mange and the vet stated that with the proper treatment, Billy would be fine. When Billy arrived at the volunteer’s home, he was put in a small bathroom. Billy just laid in a corner of the bathroom and one could easily tell he needed to be left alone. The volunteers gave him time to rest. The first weeks of Billy were very overwhelming. He felt very safe and secure in his small private space and he was sleeping for many hours.
He was eating four times a day and afterwards he was back to sleep again. The volunteer that took him home felt that she had to give everything to protect and nurture him, and checked on him many times during the day. Billy never made a sound when he was in that bathroom. He did not bark or scratch anything. He did not do even the slightest movement. The people just changed his water daily, put food on his plate and watch him sleep. He was feeling very comfortable in that bed that he was leaving it only to pee every once in a while.
After many weeks, when the people in Foster care took his pictures for his rescue video, people started saying that the video looked fake. In just a few weeks, Billy became a gorgeous, trusting and loving dog. And then, an email for an adoption arrived from 2000 kilometres away. It was the only adoption request that Billy had, but the people in Animal Welfare would have picked it anyway among a million others. The request was sent from a Greek girl living in Switzerland who followed Billy’s story from the very beginning. A conversation of exchanging emails and messages started and the girl was informed about anything concerning Billy and his welfare, what he loved doing and the way he would behave in a new environment.
The volunteers also sent her photos and videos of him playing with other dogs and sitting and looking healthy and cute. Saying goodbye to him was the hardest thing the people in foster care had imagined doing. The girl who adopted him started sending to them photos and videos of Billy’s new life with messages saying how his daily routine was. The people in foster care were missing him so much they were very fascinated in hearing news about him and they sought to know every new detail and every new photo. A lot of dogs came after Billy. But through time, the photos of him were still very welcome to the Animal Welfare centre. His photos became desktop backgrounds and mobile wallpapers.
The people there felt that his memory was fading away and they tried in that way to keep him as close to their heart as possible. Finally, the reunion happened. Billy was always too special for the foster volunteers. He recognized his old friends and he was so happy he was together again with them. Billy was running and playing with other dogs and did whatever dogs do when they are together. He was not anymore the hairless, filthy and anorexic dog that was fostered, but not even the healthy and beautiful animal that was adopted almost a year ago. He looked very happy.

He was completely healthy, well-shaped and well-trained by the girl who adopted him and he became completely her dog. Her pet. Her friend and family.
