Dogs, with the scientific name; Canis lupus familiaris are considered the first domesticated animal in human history, and often regarded to as man’s best friend and sometimes, preferred companion. Dogs have a lifespan of between 10 and 13 years.

Dogs andhumans have been living together for over 14,000 years. It’s said that dogs are direct descendants of wolves, having descended from wolves about 130,000 years ago! Through the ages, dogs have been useful to man, used for various purposes like companionship, protection, hunting, aiding the handicapped, herding… The list is endless!

Today, we would be list out five reasons why dogs are great animals.

  1. Dogs are loyal pets

Dogs are renowned for their incredible loyalty to their human owners. Dogs are pack animals, thus are not loners, once a dog bonds with its owner, it would always look out for them no matter what. There was a story of a Dog named Masha in Russia whose owner was admitted to a hospital two years before the reportage and had died a year ago, but Masha made visiting the hospital daily a routine, not knowing her owner had died.

Dog breeds famous for their loyalty include the Newfoundland, Irish wolfhound, and German shepherd.

  1. Dogs are great medical detectors

Dogs are great medical detectors used in various modern hospitals to help sniff out diseases and various other medical conditions in humans and other specimens, and it’s all detected with their nose – a dog has over 200 million scent glands, compared to a human’s mere 5 million. This means a dog’s sense of smell is about 5,000 times stronger than ours.

A research organized by a UK charity organization (Medical Detection Dogs) reported how dogs can instinctively alert their diabetic owners when their blood sugar levels are getting low. Other ongoing researches are trying to make a breakthrough on cancer detection dogs – it’s being observed that dogs can detect odorants that become altered in the early stages of ovarian cancer. It’s also been reported that dogs can detect an epileptic phaseabout an hour before it happens!

  1. Dogs are highly intelligent

Although, intelligence varies with the species of dog, but overall, dogs are one of the smartest animals alive. Dogs are just remarkable animals; they can adhere to complex instructions. Besides human, dogs can be said to be the most successful animal on the planet, this can only be achieved with a distinct level of intelligence – Rico is a Collie breed of dog in Germany famous for its ability to be acquainted with the names of various object. Researchers believe Rico could achieve this feat by inference, same as with children.

  1. Dogs protect we humans

Dogs have been protecting us from time immemorial, you might not even have a dog, but dogs are at our borders and airports, working alongsideimmigration officers in sniffing out explosives and smuggled drugs. Dogs are also helping out in taking down dangerous criminals with the police, and in fighting our wars. Whenever humans reach our limits, the dog would take it from there, with their amazing nose and sensitive ears they had pricked.

These amazing creatures can offer companionship–they can offer great comfort to people. It’s known that dogs can reduce levels of loneliness in man and can give a distinct sense of purpose when we care for them. Dogs are also known to reduce stress levels.
